HELP AND GUIDES

BSR codes and income tax payments

Find the BSR code for an actual tax payment and understand why a branch-directory match cannot confirm a challan.

Use the details of your payment

An income tax payment record may show a seven-digit BSR code, payment date and challan serial number. Use the details of that transaction, not a similar code from a branch search.

A challan is a tax-payment record or form. A directory entry describes a bank branch; it does not record your payment.

Where to check the BSR code

Use your payment receipt or the Income Tax Department’s official service. Its guidance explains how to view the BSR code and challan serial number for a completed payment. Follow the current guidance for the service you used.

Keep the full number

Copy all seven digits, including any zero at the start. Check the payment date and challan serial number as well. If a detail is missing or different, check the original record. Do not pick the closest search result.

Why this directory cannot verify a challan

Our main source is a pension-related BSR directory. Some of its entries use other identifiers. A branch or IFSC match cannot show whether a tax payment was received or credited, or whether a branch accepts that payment today.

If a payment detail is wrong

Contact the bank or the relevant official tax service for a payment problem. We can review an error in our own directory, but we cannot trace a transaction or correct an official challan. Do not send us receipts or private tax papers.
